10 Tips for Properly Taking Care of a New Tattoo

Congratulations on your new tattoo! Now it's time to take proper care of it to ensure it heals well and looks great. Here are ten tips to help you do just that:

  1. Initial Bandage: After your artist finishes, they will wrap your tattoo in plastic or a sterile bandage to protect it from bacteria and prevent it from drying out. Leave the bandage on for at least two hours, but no more than 12.

  2. Washing Your Tattoo: Gently wash your tattoo with warm water and mild soap, being careful not to damage the delicate new skin. Dry the area with a clean towel.

  3. Applying Aftercare Cream: Use a small amount of aftercare cream three to five times a day for the first week or two to keep your tattoo hydrated and help it heal properly.

  4. Avoiding Sunshine: Keep your tattoo out of the sun for the first few weeks to avoid sun damage. After that, use sunscreen to protect the area.

  5. Swimming Pool Rules: Avoid swimming pools, hot tubs, and baths for the first two weeks to prevent irritation from chemicals. If you must swim, cover your tattoo with a waterproof bandage.

  6. Sleeping on Your Tattoo: Sleep on your back with a clean pillowcase to protect your tattoo from friction as you move around in your sleep.

  7. Clothing Over Your Tattoo: Avoid tight clothing that can irritate your tattoo. If you must wear something tight, apply a thin layer of cream or lotion to create a barrier.

  8. Avoiding Touching Your Tattoo Unnecessarily: Touching your tattoo can cause irritation and delay the healing process. If you must touch it, wash your hands first.

  9. Staying Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water helps your skin heal properly, so stay hydrated.

  10. Seeing Your Artist for a Follow-Up: Schedule a follow-up appointment with your artist to check on the healing process and ask any questions.

By following these tips, you can ensure that your new tattoo heals properly and looks great.
